Use of Lasers in Cosmetic Surgery
Laser technology permeates our society today; lasers are used for playing music, performing delicate eye surgery, and even laser guided weaponry. People looking to improve their appearance and look younger and healthier also benefit from the use of lasers in cosmetic surgery. Leading edge cosmetic surgical offices are adopting laser technology almost as quickly as it is introduced and approved by the FDA.
One of the primary reasons lasers are so effective for use in surgery is the ability to create precise incisions with minimal bleeding. The lasers actually coagulate or congeal tissue as they cut through tissue. The laser can also be directed to pinpoint its energy to areas not reachable by other means. The precision of lasers allows the surgeon to work on specific wavelengths that can treat one type of tissue, but leave other nearby tissue unaffected.
One of the most popular uses for lasers in the cosmetic surgeon’s office is skin resurfacing. The effects, like many medical advancements, were discovered almost by accident. When surgeons treated severe acne scars with lasers, they discovered that nearby wrinkles also disappeared. Studies were conducted and the laser was approved for use in overall skin resurfacing techniques.
Laser skin resurfacing works in a similar way to chemical peel and microderm abrasion, the skin is wounded to kick start the body’s healing process to create new, younger looking skin. With the use of the laser, the doctor has more control over where the treatment can occur and adjust the level of intensity. After treatment, the skin may be red and irritated much like with sunburn, but it is usually not painful. As the body heals, new skin replaces the outer layer of skin, eliminating wrinkles and blemishes.
Laser assisted liposuction is one of the newest cosmetic surgery laser applications. The laser has a wide range of uses including surgical incision and excision of tissue, ablation, vaporization, and coagulation of soft tissue. The laser produces a burst of energy that liquefies fat tissue, making it easier to remove through the suction device. The laser device is a small tube that is inserted through an incision in the skin. The device is used in conjunction with normal tumescent liposuction procedures.
Laser hair removal is another common use of lasers in cosmetic surgery. Using the same laser that is used for skin resurfacing, the wavelength can be changed to remove hair. This allows the surgeon to eliminate unwanted hair, while leaving other tissues intact. The laser is truly the cosmetic surgeon’s most versatile tool in the fight against the affects of aging. It is important to find a surgeon who is skilled in laser technology and who constantly trains when new laser procedures are introduced.

Development of High Power Fiber Laser Technologies $98.77 The development of high power fiber laser and technologies are covered in this thesis. The first part of the thesis simulates the signal gain spectrum in an erbiumytterbium fiber amplifier, which can be implemented in fiber laser systems to generate high power output.
